Timetable
If you have not already done so, you should check your timetable on Learn.
Regulations
You should ensure you are familiar with University Regulation VII on the Conduct of Examinations (particularly paragraphs 21–34), University Regulation XVII on Impaired Performance (particularly paragraphs 3-5), and University Regulation XVIII on Academic Misconduct. You can also view all University Regulations.
You should also read the University’s Impaired Performance Policy and Procedures.
Seat Numbers
Your seat number for each examination will be made available on Learn before the examination period begins. If your seat number/personal timetable is not shown please contact the Student Records and Examinations Office immediately.
For reference, a duplicate hard copy of the seat numbers list will be available outside the examination venue. If you have any issues regarding seat numbers, please report to the temporary Examinations Office located on the 1st floor of the New Sports Hall.
Arrival in Exam Hall
Arrive at the Examination Hall in good time and locate your desk. Seat numbers are available in advance on Learn.
Entering the Exam
When the Invigilators tell you that you may enter the Examination Hall, leave any coats, bags, briefcases, or other prohibited items where the Invigilators direct, before finding your seat IN SILENCE. There will be signs indicating where you can leave your belongings depending on the length of the exam you are sitting. If you inadvertently bring prohibited material into an Examination Hall (e.g. revision notes) you should IMMEDIATELY alert an Invigilator. Please note that bringing blank paper into an Examination Hall is also prohibited – all your rough work must be done in the answer book provided.
You MUST NOT turn over your question paper or write anything until the Invigilators formally start the exam. An air horn will be used in the New Sports Hall to indicate the start of the exam. In other venues, an invigilator will verbally announce that you may begin.
Mobile Phones
ALL MOBILE PHONES ARE BANNED FROM EXAMINATION HALLS. You may be charged with academic misconduct if you are found to be in possession of a mobile phone in an Examination Hall.
If you have valid reasons for bringing a mobile phone with you to an exam (eg. for contact in an emergency before or afterwards), the phone MUST BE SWITCHED OFF and left where the invigilators direct. If you have an alarm watch, you must ensure that it will not make any sound during an examination.
Calculators, Dictionaries and Other Additional Materials
You will only be permitted to use a calculator, or other additional materials in an Examination Hall where this is specified in the question paper rubric. You may refer to an English/native tongue dictionary where you have a letter from your department permitting this. However, it is your responsibility to obtain such a letter, and take it with you to all of your exams.
It is also your responsibility to ensure there are no notes in your dictionary. Invigilators will closely inspect all dictionaries during the course of each examination, and you will be charged with academic misconduct if your dictionary is found to contain any prohibited materials.
ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES/TRANSLATORS, OR ANY OTHER PROGRAMMABLE DEVICES ARE BANNED FROM EXAMINATION HALLS, UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED IN THE QUESTION PAPER RUBRIC.
It is likely that you will be charged with academic misconduct if you are found to be in possession of such a device. Further details on academic misconduct can be found in the Student Handbook http://www.lboro.ac.uk/admin/ar/student/handbook/section11/index.htm.
Leaving the Exam Hall
You may not leave during the first 30 minutes and last 15 minutes of your examination. If you arrive more than 30 minutes late for an exam, you will not be permitted to enter the Examination Hall. You should report to your department immediately for further advice.
To leave the Examination Hall temporarily, you must be accompanied by an Invigilator (you should raise your arm to attract the attention of an Invigilator). If you leave the Hall unaccompanied you will not be permitted to return.
Illness
If, after entering the Examination Hall, you do not feel well enough to start/continue your exam, you should alert an invigilator immediately.
Exam Papers
Examination papers must not be removed from the Examination Hall under any circumstances, you must leave the paper on your desk. Removing an examination paper from the Examination Hall could constitute Academic Misconduct.
End of Exam
The Invigilators will tell you when you must stop writing at the end of the examination. There will be mixed length exams in some sessions. If your exam finishes earlier than those around you please remain seated until the invigilator has collected your paper. You may then leave the exam hall IN SILENCE. At the end of the longer exam, in the New Sports Hall, an air-horn will be used to indicate the end of the exam. You must remain seated IN SILENCE until you are directed to leave by the Invigilators.
Complaints
In order to ensure that all complaints regarding the management and invigilation of exam halls are dealt with effectively, please report any problems to the temporary Examinations Office immediately after the examination concerned. The office is located on the 1st floor of the New Sports Hall and will be clearly signposted.
