Economic Implications of alternative scholarly publishing models

Economic Implications of alternative scholarly publishing models

Funded by JISC

Project head: Professor Charles Oppenheim, Anne Morris, Claire Creaser, Helen Greenwood plus colleagues from the Department of Economics

Duration: November 2007 - November 2008

Description
The aim of the project is to inform policy discussion and enable stakeholders to better understand the institutional, budgetary and wider economics and social implications of the three emerging models of scholarly publication, i.e., subscription journals, open access journals and self-archiving in repositories. The project builds on recent work carried out in Australia and to respond to gaps in data identified by the UK Scholarly Journals 2006 Baseline report.

The project involves identification of costs and benefits of each of the three models, followed by an estimate of the economic costs and benefits. the work is being carried out with john Houghton of Victoria University, Australia, who ran the earlier Australian project.
