Area of Current Research
The complexity of healthcare systems has resulted in autonomous and heterogeneous health information system infrastructure that are difficult to be managed and integrated; and thus, sharing medical data has become an issue. The adoption of health information systems based on interoperable standards has been seen among other things the appropriate solution for this barrier. However, health data standards on their own do not guarantee the acceptability and sustainability of health information systems, due to the variety of overlapping and conflicting of health data standards. Therefore, there is a need for an agreed national initiative on health data standards to maximise interoperability across the health sector and decrease the risk associated with the implementation of specific standards. Furthermore, healthcare authorities must be acknowledged that standardisation is never merely the smooth technical application of specifications, but a rather complex balancing between different types of requirements and factors of organisational aspects and social and managerial factors. Therefore, main focus of current research is to explore and identify the critical factors that influence the adoption of health information technology related standards.
