.Title: Collaborative professional development: how professional organisation members mutually benefit each other by sharing project knowledge online

During the last two years before commencing this PhD study I worked at the University of Sheffield for a project called OrganiK. This European funded project looked at the way sharing of knowledge in small and medium organisations can be enhanced using social and semantic web technologies. During this project it became clear that the competitive element that naturally exists in private firms prohibited a great deal of knowledge sharing amongst actors.
Having realised this prohibiting element existed within private firms, the possibility of conducting an investigation into knowledge sharing among professional organisation members, preferably within a professional body that encourages such behaviour and where no element of competition exists, became ever more tempting, resulting in taking the opportunity to conduct just that sort of study at the University of Loughborough.
