.Title: Information governance for the agricultural research sector in Brazil
The development of modern information and communication technologies in the last years of the 20th century can be compared, concerning its significance, to the invention of the mobile characters printing in the 15th century. The information explosion that accompanied these technologies’ appearance has contributed to consolidate a new society where information, knowledge, and innovation correspond to richness and competitive advantage.
Particularly for organizations, information is a key to success: an essential input to governance and strategic decision; an important and indispensable resource for both internal and external environments. Accessing and disseminating information, besides of selecting and colleting external information of interest, is a determinant factor for achieving organizational goals. For that reason, the several processes concerning information management in an organization might be developed according to this organization’s necessities, specificities, culture and environment.
The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) is a large state-owned corporation that plays an important role in research, development, and innovation for tropical agriculture. Over the past few years, Embrapa has experienced a great qualitative and quantitative jump in institutional scientific production.
Considering the above scenario, this research project aims to analyse information management processes, strategies and policies at Embrapa and to conceive a model for effective information governance in Brazilian agricultural research.
