English and American Studies
This BA honours degree offers you the opportunity to pursue those subject areas traditionally associated with English whilst developing a specialism in American Studies. On the English side of the programme you will take some of the modules that are compulsory for students on our single honours English programme. In your first year these modules will be Critical Studies 1 and 2, Introduction to Poetry 1 and 2 and Introduction to Language. In the second year you will study British Drama 1576-1737 and in the final year the compulsory English component is Modernisms. You will also be able to choose from a wide-ranging and exciting selection of optional English modules. The American Studies component of your studies will be at least one-third and up to three-quarters of the programme depending on your choice of options. This part of the programme places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary work allowing you to forge links between American literature, film, the visual arts, music, geography, history and politics. The Department offers a wide range of modules in this subject area including Introduction to American Literature, Introduction to Film Studies, American Noir, Nineteenth-Century American Writing, Moby Dick, African American Culture, American Gothic and Horror Writing, American Horror Film, American Adaptations, America at War, Postmodern America, Punishment and American Culture, Narratives of American Sport, The American West, American Drama, Contemporary U.S. TV Drama and Women on American Television. In the final year you will have the chance to write an interdisciplinary dissertation in American Studies. As part of the programme you may also choose to study U.S. Politics and the Civil Rights Movement in modules offered by the Department of Politics, History and International Relations. The Department of English and Drama has good links with Universities in North America and exchange programmes are available in your second year.
This programme is replacing English with North American Literature and Film. The last intake for this programme is October 2011.
