The International Relations of the European Union
This research theme builds on extensive research on the external relations of the European Union and on European foreign policy in the Department of Politics, International Relations and European Studies at Loughborough University. CSIG provides the framework for the further development of work in this area and its relationship to the theory and practice of international governance.
Britain in the World
Increasing global interdependence and greater interconnectedness between domestic and foreign environments means that new directions are called for in the study of national foreign policies. The Britain in the World research theme adopts an interdisciplinary perspective on two main areas of investigation: British external policy and policy presentation.
Governance and its Alternatives
International governance is centrally concerned with the principles, laws, processes and institutions that address issues of global or international significance. The Governance and its alternatives research theme explores alternatives to this framework by focusing on the politics of everyday life.
Diplomacy and Governance
Globalisation and regionalisation are presenting ever more complex challenges to the management of international policy and this is reflected in the growing diversification of the structures and processes of diplomacy. This research theme investigates the changing nature of contemporary diplomacy and its role in the development of governance structures and processes.
Governance and Security
Security - whether this be related to issues of the possession and use of military force, terrorism, migration, the environment, human welfare, or access to resources – is a highly contentious policy domain. This research theme studies these security aspects in the framework of institutions such as the United Nations, NATO and the European Union as well as in the external security policies of major states.
Politics and Governance of Sport
Research on the governance of sport focuses on the relations between governmental and non-governmental actors in the regulation of the sector and analyses the consequences of public policies and wider phenomena such as globalisation and commercialisation for sports governance.
