Biography

After graduating in History and Politics from Queen Mary College, London I completed my doctorate, which examined Peter Kropotkin’s theory of mutual aid, at Nuffield College, Oxford. I came to the Department in 1992. My research interests are in the history of ideas and political theory and I contribute to courses on political theory and options on anti-capitalism, protest and resistance.

Research publications

I have published on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century socialism, on contemporary anarchist thought, the relationship between anarchism and Marxism, utopianism, art and politics and political violence and terrorism. I am interested in recovering neglected traditions in socialist thought and the relationship between radical politics and avant-garde art, in examining the fluidity of political ideas and the processes of ideological formation. I have published two books, edited a three-volume collection on terrorism and co-edited (with Laurence Davis) a volume on anarchism and utopianism.  My work has been published a range of major journals in the history of ideas including the History of Political Thought, Journal of Political Ideologies, History of European Ideas, European Journal of Political Theory and the International Review of Social History.

I am currently completing a research companion on anarchism, to be published by Continuum, and working on a study of Kropotkin’s political thought.

Research activities

With my colleagues Dave Berry and Alex Christoyannopoulos, I am a co-ordinator of the Anarchism Research Group. I am the editor of Anarchist Studies, a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of William Morris Studies and Anarchist Developments in Cultural Studies.  I am a member of the William Morris Society , the British Association for Victorian Studies, the Utopian Studies Society, the Association for Political Theory , the Political Studies Association (PSA), and member and co-founder the Anarchist Studies Network, a specialist group of the PSA. I have been a participant on BBC Radio 4’s Ideas in Our Time on Anarchism and BBC Radio 3’s Nightwaves.

Supervision

I am currently working with Osama Abu-Irshaid, Cris Illiopoulos, Sureyyya Turkeli, and James Donaghey. If you would like to discuss proposals for research in any of the areas of interest described above, please email me.
