Undergraduate Degrees
The department provides six undergraduate degree programmes in Politics (with a series of Minor subjects), International Relations, History and Politics, History and International Relations, History and English, History and Geography.
Staff
The Department currently has 22 full-time academic staff: five Professors, eight Senior Lecturers, and nine Lecturers. It also has a number of part-time staff particularly related to the Department’s language teaching programme. The administrative staff consists of two Administrative Assistants, two Secretaries, one Learning Resources Centre Manager who works in support of teaching and learning and one Technical (IT) Assistant.
Learn and perfect a foreign language
The University-wide Language Programme run by the Department provides modules in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese with a variety of entry and exit levels.
Study Abroad – an international curriculum
Politics and IR students have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at a range of partner Universities in continental Europe where the teaching is in English, and some students taking a language minor can opt to spend a year abroad either at a Foreign University or in employment. The Department hosts approximately forty exchange students from continental Europe at any given time studying alongside UK students.
Postgraduate Study
The Department also has two taught postgraduate degree programmes in International Relations and Research Methods, and contributes to a joint programme, International Financial and Political Relations, with the Geography Department and the School of Business and Economics.
The Department is currently home to approximately 25 PhD students working in a wide variety of fields.
Facilities
The Department is located in the Schofield Building to which it moved in 1998. All full-time academic staff have individual offices equipped with computing, e-mail and Internet facilities. Departmental rooms include a Conference Room, modernised teaching rooms and a multi-media open access Learning Resources Centre. Research Students have shared offices with appropriate ICT facilities. There is also a Staff and Postgraduate Common Room, which is used for both informal and scheduled social events.
