Physical education
Loughborough's expertise in the training of Physical Education teachers is recognised nationally and internationally. If you have a relevant degree (i.e. one in which at least 50% is in physical education and/or sports science) and want to train to teach where you have access to a full range of facilities for sport and health-related exercise, Loughborough University is the appropriate choice for you. The PGCE course takes full advantage of the range of expertise offered by staff in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and is taught by tutors, local teachers and other specialists with wide interests in all aspects of sport, physical education and health-related activities. For many years, Loughborough has been instrumental in developing innovative ways of teaching curriculum activities and you will be encouraged to share in this work and explore the potential of a broad range of teaching and learning styles.
You will develop your teaching competence across the 11-18 age range in all National Curriculum activity areas for physical education (athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities, and swimming) plus health-related exercise, GCSE, A Level and other PE accredited courses. This will be achieved largely in a practical way with the emphasis on pedagogical skills and effective delivery in schools. Working alongside other trainees and with experienced teachers in schools, you will learn how to effectively promote the physical, social, moral and cultural development of pupils through physical education.
The course also includes a professional induction programme which will provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet and assess pupils' needs and to plan and deliver physical education safely and effectively within the National Curriculum. Much of your work will be undertaken with other trainees so that you can learn together to reflect upon your teaching performance and respond to what is being asked of you during your teaching practices. The coursework tasks which you will be asked to undertake will be linked closely to your practical experiences in schools.
If you wish to apply for this course, you should possess good personal knowledge and practical competence in most of the main activities in the physical education curriculum. Our trainees are well sought after and received by schools when they are appointing new staff. Once qualified, we expect that you will teach across the broad spectrum of physical education and, in due course, assume responsibility for the subject in a school.
