Conferences and SeminarsSince 2001, the Centre for Environmental Studies has organised a programme of one day seminars entitled 'Sustainable Solutions'.
The second seminar, Land Remediation was held at Loughborough on 6 February 2002. The one-day technical seminar dealt with the scientific aspects of contaminated land management from site appraisal, sampling and monitoring procedures, through to remediation techniques and afteruse. The focus of the seminar was the remediation of land contaminated with coal spoil, coal tar, PAHs, tar and bitumen, and phenolics. Topics presented during the seminar covered the process of land remediation from initial site appraisal, liability, analysis, performance testing and planning to remediation and site afteruse. The legislative background was explored especially with regard to EPA Part II and the protection of the environment including protection of water courses and groundwater. Novel remediation techniques were presented and case study material was used to demonstrate opportunities and constraints to site afteruse. The third seminar in the Sustainable Solutions series was Sustainable Development and the Environment which was held at Loughborough on 20 March 2002. This one-day meeting was organised in collaboration with the Centre for Hazard and Risk Management and the Business School at Loughborough University. The seminar presented issues such as good practice in waste management which promote the development of business and industry whilst protecting the environment. The meeting was based on the premise that environmental good practice is an opportunity, not an obstruction to successful business. The meeting was attended by managers in industry and business, consultants, local authorities, 'green' organisations, academics, researchers and students. The fourth seminar Achieving Sustainability: Poverty Elimination and the Environment was held at Loughborough on 9 April 2003. The one day seminar organised in collaboration with the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) and Department of Geography gave an opportunity to understand various perspectives on the topic from a range of speakers. Speakers included WHO, DFID, Water Aid, PSIRU (University of Greenwich), WEDC and University of Birmingham. The context of the seminar was international development and was attended by academics, consultants, NGOs and students. Forthcoming Sustainable Solutions Seminars
